There is a critical configuration requirement for Avatar on a new, freshly installed PC with Windows 8.x. You must set the operating system compatibility mode for the Java binary.
If you do not do this you may see a message like the following stating "Sorry, your operating system [Windows_NT_(unknown)] is not supported" when you try to use Avatar:

To fix this and update the operating system compatibility mode for Java:
1) Locate the javaw.exe binary for the version of Java used by Avatar. This is normally version 6 and is located in:
32-bit Windows: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin
64-bit Windows: C:\Program Files x86\Java\jre6\bin
2) Find the binary, right click on it and select Properties:

3) Click the Compatibility tab, change the Compatibility mode to "Windows 7", and click OK.
